Darchrow’s Corner: Adding fuel to your Fire Builds

Greetings, its time to have a look another element today.

Busy times, with GW, Collabs and work in general. I want to get the last remaining elements Fire and Water completed. Water will be released after Fire in relatively quick succession (Xiei intending) and Light will follow with a preliminary look which is easier to do.

Before I want to dwell into the various builds of Fire I want to make sure everyone is familiar with Damage Calculation since I normally do not talk about it much in the sections itself.

For the uninitiated check out Weapon / Summon Optimization and Progression Guide and give a quick skim on damage calculation and sections skill modifiers and also section on enmity. I will eventually revamp this guide and have it here on this site with a fresh coat of paint. As it stands, I am currently producing these for the benefit of being able to truncate most of the complex stuff out of the guide, and make it more friendly towards newer players.

Now to start with Fire, probably the most controversial element in terms of criticism due to their main attack weapon being a staff. I am not here to defend it or present this piece as its eulogy after having my way with it. I enjoy playing all elements and started this project out of curiosity of how Cosmos Builds fit into the current weapon grid, the Dark Guide was a jumping point before I decided how to progress into my Dark Grid and hence I decided it would be fun to do the rest.

So without further a due it’s time to select the ground rules for how I will go about at selecting my choices for weapons and summons. All weapons considered will be farmable weapons only and are not from moons or gatcha, all summons will be limit broken (uncapped) to their maximum capability.

Damage ranges considered will be for the following:

Full Grid: 15k Weaponless Damage

5.5k from level 125 and level 100 gatcha summons at around 1.9k damage each.

With all 3* Magna (Omega) weapons, gatcha weapons and Unknowns aplenty.

HL Grid: 18k Weaponless Damage

6k from level 150 and 4* summons at around 2.2k-2.5k (say 2.3k).

With all 4*Magna (Omega) Weapons, got some + bonuses on your weapons.

+99 Grids: 21k Weaponless Damage

Same as HL Grid but with +99 on all weapons and summons.

Now we consider the candidates for weapons we might put in our weapon grid.

Now I’m going to consider some potential builds for Fire and run them through the gauntlet to find out what is stronger. Weapon choices will be systematic created (within reason) to make sure no potentially stronger build is overlooked. Main hand will use GW dagger since daggers are average in base damage compared to possible main hand choices, unless stated otherwise.

All Cosmos Builds will be in blue to help with comparing non-Cosmos and Cosmos builds.

I will discuss the best builds for people using Main hand, Cosmos and Non-Cosmos for people using Colossus Magna (Omega) or Agnis.

So without further a due, here are the following results:

Cosmos Staff Builds are in general weaker by a small margin, with the consideration of the high health stat of Colossus staves, Cosmos Staff Builds will make your team very durable in battle whilst sacrificing some damage. Bahamut Daggers are generally the go-to for Fire Teams due to Yuel, however I want to see how Cosmos Staff Builds compare when using a Bahamut Staff.

Using a main hand here affects your damage slightly making it a good choice for fire, for weapons such as GW Dagger, GW Harp or specific weapons such as a spear for Dual Impulse (Double Trouble) Holy Saber or Bishop. If you are planning to use a main hand weapon, replacement of Colossus Staff is recommended when using a Cosmos Build. For non-Cosmos Builds, secondary Unknown Weapon should be replaced once you are transitioning into HL. For non-Cosmos Builds the damage difference between having 1 Unknown and 2 Unknowns is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

Now I will consider the same builds but using Bahamut Staff to see how Cosmos Builds hold-up with an additional staff to the weapon count.

Even using a Bahamut Staff, Cosmos Staff Builds are not competitive versus non-Cosmos Builds for fire. Bahamut Staff will also limit your race usage to Eruns / Harvin such as Yuel, Zahlhamelina and Fire Metera.

Next I will have a look at how Weapon proficiency changes the balance of Cosmos versus non-Cosmos Builds, first will be Bishop and then Mystic.

Using a class that is proficient in Staffs favours Magna Build 8 and Build 10 during the HL stages. Cosmos Staff Build edges out slightly when using a Bahamut Staff, however as previously said, Bahamut Dagger is going to be the more realistic choice here. Now to consider the same but using a Bahamut Dagger instead of Bahamut Staff.

Even when using Bahamut Dagger with Bishop, the balance of which builds are strong remain the same for using Bishop with Bahamut Staff. However Cosmos Staff Builds have been relegated back to being weaker than their non-Cosmos counterparts.

Now for a final look, I want to see how using Mystic, which have double proficiency in Staves, affect the balance of the Builds.

Table 6: Outgoing Damage of each Magna Build at various stages using Mystic

Magna Build 13: 490,433 647,932 773,410
Magna Build 14: 477,074 639,058 762,607

Even with Mystic and Bahamut Dagger, Cosmos Staff Builds are not as strong as non-Cosmos Builds, the strength of Magna Build 8 and 13 are increased at all stages of progression.

Conclusion:

In terms of damage output Cosmos Builds are weaker than non-Cosmos Builds unless using Bahamut Staff or Bishop. The consideration for a Cosmos Staff should only be done for the benefit of the Cosmos skills and additional durability granted from the large health stat of Colossus Staff. If you plan to use a Cosmos Build, I suggest Magna Build 1 for all stages of progression, Build 6 with 2 Unknowns before transitioning to HL and Build 8 once you have managed to 4* a couple of Colossus Staves.

If you are using Unknown Katana from Sakura Wars, I would recommend sticking to 2 at most. This is due to the health lost granted for this weapon, the double attack skill itself is very low (2.2%).

Attack buffs (such as that from Lucifer or Rage) will make Builds with Suzaku Katana diminish in effectiveness, the change in balance however is unaffected.

For non-Cosmos Builds I recommend Magna Build 11, 12 for pre-HL Builds and Build 10, 13 for once you have transitioned into HL. However Builds 11 and 12 using 2 Unknowns are only a fraction weaker than Build 10, 13. The damage difference between the cost of making an additional 4* Colossus Staff is not worth it considering the high damage of Unknown Fire weapons.

Weapon proficiency with Staves from Bishop does not affect the balance of the Builds to a great extend, whilst in the extreme case of using Mystic with double proficiency, Magna Build 8 and 13 are favoured.

Similar to Magna Builds, the Spears being a low attack and high health weapon makes Cosmos Builds weaker than their non-Cosmos counterpart. Ifrit Spears are not as potent as most farmable weapons due to its secondary skill being critical.

Using a main hand here reduces your damage with Cosmos builds to a greater extent than non-Cosmos builds, if you plan to use a main hand, a non-Cosmos build is preferable here as you experience minimal damage loss from using a main hand instead of an additional spear.

Cosmos Builds are weaker and can only be justified for their health and skill bonuses.

For all Primal Builds, Suzaku Katana is a key component in most of your tool-kit due to its higher Damage and stronger Attack Modifier.

This build does not use any Bahamut weapons and allows for maximum flexibility of race.

As per usual, it’s time to see how it Builds fair when using a class that is proficient with Spears.

The 25% additional damage from Spears granted by Holy Saber makes Cosmos Builds less relevant and the effectiveness of using a Suzaku Katana has diminished slightly. Balance of Builds change slightly skewing favour towards Spear Heavy Builds.

Before comparing the two Builds of Magna versus Primals, I want to see how the Primal Builds compared when fighting against wind. This is most relevant because of the Crit Chance granted by the spears, these give an additional 50% damage upon triggering but only works when you have elemental advantage.

Personally, critical is one of the harder to justify skills, due to it only being useful fighting against an element that is weak to you. However, critical comes from limited sources and if you can accumulate enough skill levels, it can become reliable. Critical also stacks with Odin summon’s active which grants you 30% chance to deal 30% additional damage. If you got both criticals to trigger you can gain an additional 95% damage.

The adjustment I will make is pretty simple here, it will be the chance to get a critical hit multiplied by the critical modifier, 50% in this case.

Modified Critical Damage = Outgoing Damage * ( 1 + 0.5 * Critical Chance )

This will try to simulate the damage bonus granted by performing critical hits. Realistically however, critical chances of 15% or below feel very unreliable in the grand scheme of things and builds with 20% critical chance and above feel like a much more stable way to have critical damage as part of your Build.

After considering the bonus from critical damage and critical chance, builds with Suzaku Katana for Cosmos Builds are considered weaker once transitioning to HL. Cosmos Builds are still weaker than non-Cosmos Builds regardless of using a main hand weapon or not.

Conclusion:

Cosmos Builds are weaker than non-Cosmos Builds, these Builds however allow you use a large amount of Spears which will have critical damage once uncapped to 4*. Critical damage will be a boon when fighting Wind and allows for an additional dynamic to your fire team. If you plan to use a Cosmos Build, I suggest Primal Build 2 and 7 or Primal Build 1 and 6 for when you’re using Holy Saber or fighting Wind.

As for non-Cosmos Builds, possible builds are Primal Builds 9 and 11. The balance does not change for weapon proficiency but if you consider fighting on-element and critical damage is a factor, Builds 8 and 12 increase in effectiveness due to the additional crit granted by more spears.

Similar to most Primal Builds you will see in these guides, most of them need a more balance grid, as evident in Cosmos Builds not being as strong in terms of damage since 2-3 Magna Weapons and 1-2 Unknowns is normally required.

ATK buffs will favour builds with 3 Magna Weapons, as the spread of damage is more even with less diminishing returns on the stacking of character modifiers (which normal weapons and buffs share with).

Colossus Builds vs Agnis Builds

2040021000(2)

When considering fighting on-element, critical attack chance and damage, Agnis Builds are stronger than Colossus Builds by 4-8%, when using 20% ATK buff both builds are even in damage varying by only 1-2% between the two.

Without considering critical bonuses from Ifrit Spear, Colossus Builds are 4-9% stronger than Agnis Builds. This increases to 10-16% when under the affect to 20% ATK buff from summons such as Lucifer, Anat or Bahamut.

Agnis Builds overall deal similar damage to Colossus Builds as Ifrit Spears have an offensive secondary skill. With the use of ATK II Moon weapons (ATK II Fire/Water Katana 3.2k damage, ATK II and double attack Gun and Bow 3.3k/2k), which cap out at 20% Attack Modifier and have a stronger secondary skill of medium strength (unlike the small skills of Ifrit Spear), this will tip the scale into Agnis Build’s favour. Fire also have Crimson Fist, which has ATK II and medium strength enmity, considered to the most potent combination of skills a weapon can have for offensive capability.

Regardless of having moon weapons or not, Ifrit Spears with Agnis gives the player a niche Fire Build that is very effective at fighting Wind and still hold up against Colossus builds for off-element fighting. Both Colossus and Agnis Builds come with high durability using Cosmos Builds but they are not necessarily recommended since you can only have one Cosmos on person. Your single Cosmos Weapon slot is better suited for Cosmos Axe, Guns or Swords.

The limitation on needing to 3* Agnis via Guild War Medals and having to uncap the Spears to gain critical attack, makes Agnis builds a hard sell for those who want to take Fire to do off-element content. Splashing one or two moon weapons (especially Crimson Fist) will make Agnis Builds competitive with Colossus Builds regardless of Critical Chance.

With the addition of 4* character weapons that are coming underway, the balance between Colossus Builds and Agnis cannot be fully realised. Character weapon for Lady Grey which starts at 2550 for 3* and 2980 for 4*, means that most weapons around 2400-2500 could see increase to at around 2900 damage. Birdman’s 4* Spear with massive increase in DA and additional break damage on ougi is an example of how effective new 4* character weapons can become. This will most likely skew the favour of Agnis Builds, but the use of gatcha weapons will not be considered here just yet.

Now that Fire is complete, we only have two elements to go.

Next Element will be Water, looking at Cosmos Builds and Non-cosmos builds using Dark Fencer, Assassin. Whilst I will also look at Chev Axes using Varuna and see how they compare. This guide has had a long time coming but I hope it hasn’t been all bad (Remember what I said about setting personal schedule for these?)
