Darchrow’s Corner: A look at Athena’s Assets
Before I dwell into the possible build choices using the weapons available from the Athena showdown. I want to give a brief information on DA/TA (Double and Triple Attack) mechanics of weapon skills.
First and foremost, DA/TA for weapon skills of the SAME category are capped at 50%. Hence, you can not exceed 50% DA/TA by stacking Athena Spears. The different categories of weapon skills are as follows:
- Normal Weapon Skills (Athena Spear, Glads Eye, Fenrir Axe)
- Magna Weapon Skills (Ancient Cortana, Ancient Auberon)
- Bahamut Weapon Skills (10% DA / 8% TA)
- Unique Skills (Level 120 Birdman Spear / Cagliostro Staff etc, 12-13% DA for MC only)
Weapons of the same category can only reach 50%, but by using a combination of different categories, it is still possible to obtain DA/TA rates of 100%. Please note that, the 50% limit also considers the boost from Summons.
This is important, as planning builds that far exceed this cap will give an unexpected outcome, such as for the case of Athena spears, less health for no added DA/TA or for Auberon, no added DA for loss of damage.
Now I will like to have a look at the potential for the new Athena Weapons at its current state and its potential when it eventually becomes available for a 4★. For reference, here are the damage values for a basic Colossus Magna Build using 4★ Colossus Staff.

Now that we have a reference point for comparison. It is time to have a look at how the Athena Spears and Swords compare to current available weapons.
The Spears and Swords somewhat complement each other due to the Spear giving DA/TA for the cost of health, whilst the Sword gives health with no negative.
The idea is to use a combination of these two weapons to give a net positive health boost and gaining DA/TA at no extra cost.
Basis of the calculation will all be considered with a HL grid, with 4★ Staves and using Pinya Axes. Same assumptions etc will be applied from that of previous calculations, just to make the comparison more equal. All will be using 3★ Agnis and 4★ Athena.
Each build will consider a set amount of Athena weapons and vary the split between Swords and Spears to find the appropriate distribution of the two. The builds will be judged on three criteria:
- Damage, this is the base damage value your get from your weapons. This value is important for things such as, Charge Attack and Skills.
- Net Health, this will considered the positive health from Athena Summon (20%) and your Athena Swords (boosted by 3★ Agnis) and have it be reduced by the Athena Spears. Note that, negative effects are not enhanced by summons.
- Modified Damage, this is the base damage value with the additional consideration for the chance of DA/TA from your weapons. Please note that this is indicative only, as you have other factors such as Party DA/TA buffs and Passive DA/TA. Things such as DA/TA from Athena weapons may appear less effective when you have GW Dagger or use Aoidos etc.
Modifier Damage based on DA/TA rates will go on basis in which DA/TA is checked in the game system. The system first checks if you perform a TA, upon failure the game then checks for DA. If both checks fail, you perform a single attack. Hence the Modified factor I will used here will be as follows:
DA/TA Modified Damage = [1 + (2 × TArate) + (1 − TArate) ⋅ DArate]
This means that, your TA modifier is based on your TA chance, hence 2 x TA Chance, but in the case you don’t TA, you still have a chance to DA, if you fail then you perform a single attack, hence 1 at the start. So the chance you don’t TA is multiplied by the DA rate to give the final Modified Damage formula for Auto Attacks.
DA/TA rates have the same rates as DA weapons. You can refer to these rates here:

It is fairly self explanatory but, as you have more spears your normal damage decreases due to the lower Base Damage of the spear. Your basic damage across the board is less than that of Magna Builds, which is expected because no 4★ yet. Now it is time to consider removing more weapons so we can add extra Athena Weapons to the mix.
Note: Due to the interest of space, some 0 spear builds will be omitted, since pure Sword Build are just there for reference purposes.

From the 3 criterion above, 3 Magna, 1 Unknown and Suzaku Katana using 3 Spears and 2 Swords seem to be the most balanced. This setup has a decent distribution of each criterion.
For a more Health focused build 2 Magna, 1 Unknown and Suzaku Katana with 2 Swords and 3 Spears has a decent amount of base damage with and modified damage with a health bonus that equals that of using double Athena build. You can sacrifice the use of the Suzaku Katana for an additional Sword, to decrease your damage slightly for extra durability.
Due to the inability to 4★ any of the Athena weapons, your Base Damage will be smaller regardless of what build you decide to do.
I will now consider the possibility of when Athena weapons obtain a 4★ in the next section.
Now it is time to consider the potential of the Weapons obtaining its eventually 4★ upgrade.
For this part I will have to assume that their 4★ stats will be exactly 120% of its 3★ stats.

Judging based on all three criteria, 2 Magnas, 1 Unknown with a Suzaku Katana using 2 Swords and 3 Spears is a balanced build, giving base damage values akin to that of normal Colossus Staff builds but with additional DA/TA and Health. You can remove the Suzaku Katana for an additional Sword or Spear for no major reduction of Base Damage with increase in either health or DA/TA respectively. Using an extra spear here will cap your DA/TA rate for Normal Weapon Category.
The boost from DA/TA is great for meter building as you gain additional meter from performing multiple attacks (Single Attack gives 10, DA gives 22, TA gives 37 etc). This will allow you to use Charge Attacks more frequently.
As the weapons are now in their current state, it is stronger for Auto Attack damage. But is still slightly weaker for Charge Attacks or Skills usage. Overall, you will most probably deal more damage with this build and obtain button pressing to the minimum.
Like most things, you will experience diminishing returns from DA/TA rates. Therefore, it is fairly obvious, characters such as Aoidos will decrease in effectiveness slightly. The general winners for this are characters who have no innate DA/TA steroid, such as Percival, Fire Potato and Magisa. Yuel is a plus for her Gurren++ for Additional Fire Damage including the typical tactic of Warlock with Splitting Spirit & Chaser to give your party up to 85-92% DA/TA (GW Dagger 30/35%, Athena Spears 50%, Base TA 5-7%).
Considering that I’ve recently lost a hold of most of my data for my previous work. I’ve having to work from the ground up again for the Dark update and Light part 2. So expect those to take a while.
